①Students often gather together in small, closed groups. If you are not part of a group, it can be difficult for you to be accepted. This is especially true if you can't speak to the members of the group in their language.

②This was the situation Sam faced each day as he went to class. Sam and his family moved to France last month. Before he arrived, he knew there would be many difficulties. But they were even worse than he imagined.

③Every lunch hour, after arriving at his new school, Sam sat alone in the dining hall. He looked at all the different groups of students around him. But he had no way to let them know that he was a good person. He simply couldn't find the right words to reach them.

④Sam knew he had to find a way to change the situation. Somehow, he had to adapt to this new environment. He did a little research on the Internet and discovered that smiling is a universal language—it is understood everywhere.

⑤One morning, as Sam was walking by a group of students, he smiled at them. A boy in the group smiled back at him. For Sam, that was a good beginning. Later,he noticed the boy coming towards him in the hall with a warm smile on his face.Sam returned the smile.

⑥Soon the boy asked Sam to join him and his group of friends for lunch.

Although Sam wasn't able to say much in French, everyone smiled and laughed.Before he knew it, Sam had a group of friends, and they all wanted to help him learn French.

⑦That day he experienced the power of a smile.

Part I Analysis of the teaching material

1. Status and function:

This unit takes a closer look at interpersonal communication and encourages the students to explore what communication means, how good communication can be achieved and why good communication skills are important. This lesson shows the power of a smile in communication. By reading this material, students will have a better understanding of how to communicate well with others.

2. Analysis of the students:

The students of Grade 9 have certain language basis. And they still keep the curiosity about the new things. The students are interested in their daily topics. So inspiring their curiosity is important. Some students may be less active, so various ways to stimulate students’ interests and motivate their participation become more important.

Part II Teaching Aims:

Lead in: The teacher shows some pictures of smiling faces to inspire students and asks students “What do you think of the smile? How do you feel?” The students enjoy the pictures and the power of a smile and answer: “ beautiful, warm, handsome, lovely, comfortable, proud, confident ---”

Pre-reading: The teacher asks students to finish the short passage about Sam.

While- reading:

Task1:The teacher asks students to read the passage quickly and answer Qs: Did Sam meet any problems after he moved to France? Did he choose to change the situation or give up? Did he solve the problem?

Task2:The teacher asks students to read and put the sentences in the correct order.

Task3:The teacher asks students to read the passage carefully and answer Qs: What 's the real situation after Sam moved to France? What's his main problem?How did he start to solve the problem?What's the result after Sam smiled at a group of students?

Post- reading:

Task1: With the help of the mind map, retell the story of Sam to your partner .

Task2: Write a short passage about the power of a smile.

Task3: Imagine you were Li Ming, your friend, Li Hua, will move to a new school . She is worried and ask you for help. Please write a letter to her and give her some suggestions.

Homework:

1.Finish writing the letter to Li Hua.

2.Read more passages about smile after class.

3.Read more passages about communication and find more ways of communicating.
