——Why didn't he come to the lecture yester-day?

——Because he was ill.

——Why do you often listen to BBC English programmes on the radio?

——Because I want to improve my English.

Because he was too tired,he stopped to have a rest.

He didn't buy the dictionary because it was too expensive.

I decided to stop and have lunch, for I was feeling quitehungry.

They had often heard of elephants, but they had never seenone, for being blind, how could they?

The men's and the women's shops are indistinguish - ablefrom each other. For the girls' shop windows display masculineshirts, while the men's windows are

full

of

scarletminiunderpants.

The leaders of the strike, two communists, laid down theirlives for the cause. But the strikers went on fight- ing.Forthe Communist Party had come on the scene and that changedthe whole course of China's history.

It will rain, for the barometer is falling.

It must be morning, for the birds are singing.

He must have passed this way,for/because his footprintsare here.

We hurried home,for/because it was getting dark.

He hid himself in the woods,for/because he was afraid.

It must have rained last night, for the ground is wet.

The ground is wet,for/because it rained last night.

It was because he was too careless that he failed in thephysics examination.

It is because he often does good deeds for his class thathe is liked by all his classmates.

It was for he was seriously ill that Mr Li did not attendthe meeting yesterday.

You shouldn't get angry just because some people speakill of you.

He came here only because he want-ed to have a talk withour chief engineer.

Katherine said that she liked my cousin simply because hewas honest.

同样,在not...because (“不要因…… 而”)以及not be-cause...but because...(“不是因为……

He did not leave home because he was afraid of his father.

He stayed in the cave all day long, not because he wasafraid, but because he was too tired.

They tried every affort to collect money for the wildlifeproject, not because they wanted to show off themselves,butbe-cause they tried to do something for wild animals.

The couple decided to settle down in the country, becausethey were tired of the noise in the city life and becausethey wanted to get more fresh air.

Every year, tobacco companies must persuade new people tostart smoking cigarettes. This is because each year mil- lionsof smokers die from the habit.

He failed in the experiment. It was because he did notfollow the professor's advice.
