《新编英语教程（修订版）》（李观仪主编，上海外语教育出版社）第一册第63页的同一篇对话中出现了如下两个含有as well as短语的句子：
句一：I don't think I did as well as I had expected.
句二：I longed to act in plays as well as to watch them.
句一中as well as后续的是句子，而句二中as well as后续的是不定式短语。这里，不同的句子结构展示了as well as两种主要的用法。
as well as是英语中常用的短语，学生常在理解和翻译上有困难。首先，短语连词as well as同“as+well+as”，这种结构外形一致含义却不同。在“as+well+as”结构中，well是副词，而as…as表示比较，该结构可译为“像……一样好”。句一便是此情形，well作为副词修饰前面的did，第二个as后跟的是一个比较从句。句一意为“我认为自己没有做到像预期的那样好。”而句二中as well as是短语连词，用法比较复杂。
根据英语词典的解释，短语连词as well as的含义是in addition to,not only…but also等，一般可汉译为“除了……以外”“不但……而且（也）………”“既……又……”等，as well as在句二中属此情形。必须注意的是，as well as作not only…but also解时，信息焦点总是在短语连词前面，所以译为“不但……而（也）……”“既……又……”时，应把as well as前后两部分的信息交换位置，这样才符合汉语的表达习惯。如句二可译为“我不但渴望看戏，而且渴望演戏”。
短语连词as well as可连接各种同等成分，既可连接名词或代词，又可连接形容词、动词、非谓语动词、介词短语和从句等等。如前所述，在汉译时宜将as well as前后两部分信息交换位置。现将各种连接情况分别叙述如下：
1.连接名词
He's got a car as well as a motorbike.
他不但有辆摩托车，而且有辆小汽车。
2.连接代词
as well as后面接代词的主格或宾格时，意义不同。
He agrees with you as well as I.
不但我同意你，他也同意你。
He agrees with you as well as me.
他不但同意我，也同意你。
3.连接形容词
She's clever as well as beautiful.
她不但漂亮，而且聪明。
4.连接动词
With television,we see a picture as well as hear a sound.
利用电视，我们不仅听得到声音，也看得到图像。
5.连接非谓语动词
The revolution of one country is only a link in the whole chain of the world revolutionary process,affecting this process as well as being affected by it.
一个国家的革命只不过是整个世界革命进程链条中的一环，它既受这个进程的影响，又影响这个进程。
6.连接介词短语
The star shines during the day as well as at night
恒星不仅夜间发亮，白天也发光。
7.连接从句
He had washed where others could not see as well as where others could see.
他不但洗净了别人看得见的地方，而且也洗净了别人看不见的地方。
as well as连接的同等成分实际上可视为省略了并列复合句后面的某些重复成分。试以上面连接代词的例句为证：
He agrees with you as well as I.=He agrees with you as well as I(agree with you).
He agrees with you as well as me.=He agrees with you as well as(he agrees with)me.
正确理解这一点有助于正确翻译一些含有as well as的句子。试以下句为例：
Plants need only the nutrients and moisture contained in the soil,and these can be supplied through gravel that eontains water,as well as through soil.
此句易误译为“植物只需要土壤中所含有的养料和水分，而这些可以通过含水的砂砾供给，这与通过土壤供给的效果一样好。”然而，该句中through gravel和through soil为同等成分，如果将并列复合句后面的省略成分补充完整，该句为：
Plants need only the nutrients and moisture contained in the soil,and these can be supplied through gravel that contains water,as well as(these can be supplied)through soil.
因此，该句的正确汉译似应为：“植物只需要土壤中所含有的养料和水分，而这些不但可以通过土壤供给，而且也可以通过含水的砂砾供给。”
另外还有几点须注意：
1.两个主语由as well as连接时，谓语动词应随第一个主语的人称和数而变。如：
She,as well as the other students,has learned how to install this electrical equipment.
2.短语连词as well as有时也可用来代替and，这一用法在列举三个或三个以上的人或事物时更为常见，一般可译为“以及”或“和”。如：
The president has said that leaders from Britain,Germany,France,ltaly as well as japan will be present at the meeting.
总统说，英国、德国、法国、意大利和日本的领导人将出席会议。
3.as well as也可用作介词，放在句末或句首，含义与用法相当于besides,in addition to，一般可译为“除……以外”，但不排除“不但……而且……”的译法。译为“不但……而且……”时，不宜像as well as用作连词那样前后信息互换。一般而言，可用“不但”去译as well as介词词组部分内容，用“而且”去译被强调的信息。如：
As well as breaking his leg,he hurt his arm.
除了摔断腿，他还伤了胳膊。（他不但摔断了腿，而且还伤了胳膊。）
She's got a cleaning job at night,as well as working during the day.
除了白天工作，她晚上还当清洁工。（她不但白天工作，晚上还当清洁工。）
