Gusao Pagoda is located in Baogai Mountain,southeast of Shishi City.It was built in Song Dynasty.It is the navigation sign of ancient Quanzhou maritime traffic.
"Shut off the smoky clouds" is a great scenic spot in Quanzhou.The cultural relics protection unit in Fujian Province has a history of more than 800 years so far.
It is backed by Quanzhou Bay,facing the Taiwan Strait.It has the potential of controlling Dongming and the south area.
It can be seen from this that the real role of Gusiu Pagoda was as a beacon in Song Dynasty.Quanzhou Port was one of the largest trading ports in the world.Its foreign trade was very prosperous and it had business contacts with more than 70 countries and regions.
As a beacon lighthouse,its significance is undoubtedly very important.But why does this tower exist? It comes from a tragic legend.
Once upon a time,there was a drought in southern Fujian,where there was no grain harvest and the people were bored.At the foot of Baogai Mountain,a poor man named Haisheng was forced to leave his newly married wife and beloved sister after failing to pay the land rent of the wealthy owner.He traveled to Nanyang and agreed to return to pay his debts in three years.
After Haisheng went to Nanyang,the sisters-in-law climbed Baogai Mountain every day to look far at the sea and return to the boat,looking forward to the reunion.Three years later,the poor brother came back by boat.
But when they saw Haisheng’s boat near the coast on the hill,they suddenly saw a storm in the gale,and storms overturned the boat.They stood at the top of the hill and watched the sea where Haisheng was buried.
The two sisters-in-law were in great pain and jumped into the sea.People built this pagoda in memory of them.
It was almost a real Titanic,and nobody survived.
There is an arch gate on the west side of the first floor of Gusiu Pagoda.There are two doors on the second floor and above.The corner of Gusiu Pagoda is in the shape of plum blossom and the top of the pagoda is in the shape of a guard bucket.Every floor of the tower is surrounded by fences;inside,there are stone steps leading to the top of the tower.
On the second floor,the doorway is inscribed with the words "Longevity Pagoda".There is a square niche on the outer wall of the fifth floor,in which there are two statues of women carved in stone.They are the sisters-in-law.
Standing on the pagoda,you can see the whole Baogai area.If you come to Shishi City,you mustn’t miss Gusao Pagoda.
