My hometown Enshi has witnessed the development of the crying marriage, which reflects not only the lives of people here, but also the changing concept of wedding and the status of women.
The crying marriage dates back to the warring states where the princesses were supposed to be faraway in marriage for their countries, the queen mother ofZhao cried for her marrying daughter, which became a ceremony of our Tujia ethnic minority.
In the past, being a bride of Tujia ethnic minority, she would start her crying a month before the wedding. A ritual as the villagers demanded, it also indicated the brides’ real minds that she worried about her unguaranteed new life or expressed her dissatisfaction of wedding arranged by others.
In the old days, the fortune teller was ranked "eight characters" first, and it was only when the fate was in harmony. In some places, parents meet to engage their children. For example, in the whole county area, after the two sides agreed, the matchmaker sent the wine and meat to the woman on behalf of the man. The date was agreed to accompany the woman's parents and the man's family to meet, and the man hosted a banquet. The young man holds a pot and drinks wine. After the first respect to the woman's wife, he honors his own family. Then the first guest toasts the wine in order. The date of marriage was agreed upon and the engagement was concluded. Afterwards, men and women sent the woman heavy gifts and dowry, the woman prepared a dowry, the man prepared furniture, and held a wedding ceremony. If the woman urges the marriage, she will make a pair of glutinous rice dumplings(commonly known as "round round") and send them to the men's family. The man's heart will be inspired, hospitality will be extended and the neighbors will be invited to accompany the guests. It is generally respected that the woman proposes to advance the marriage date.
As soon as the float arrived, the female family moved to welcome the artillery. After the fierce family team entered the women's house, the groom worshipped his father-in-law's mother-in-law and presented a big red greeting note written in the name of his father. Then there is the woman's family. During the ceremony, the matchmaker and groom should be cautious, because there are many unwritten customs in Chinese people. During the three days of marriage, ordinary and younger teenagers among relatives and friends can make up a few small comedies on the matchmaker and groom. It is called "washing media" and "hanging red"(commonly known as "Hexinke" in the countryside). The bride's sister-in-law may ambush half a bowl of chili noodles in the lower layer of the rice bowl for the groom. As authentic Sichuan cuisine eat); The bride's sister will give her brother-in-law a pot of ash while pouring wine ... .. The matchmaker and the groom should give in to these little farce that can increase the atmosphere of joy-although they may also "treat them in their own way" and retaliate a little, but they must not be angry or angry. Even noisy and scuffle with the host and guest.
Before modern times, Chinese marriage customs generally evolved withinthe above framework. Although the Han nationality has a large population and a wide geographical distribution, marriage customs also have differences in one way or another in different times and in different regions, on the whole they are nothing more than these aspects. Its cultural connotation is the same. Since modern times, due to the social productivity lifestyle and other aspects of a series of shocks, especially the influence of Western learning, Western culture began to gradually deepen the social life of the Chinese people, marriage customs have also undergone the first change. If the parents 'right to marry is moved down, a group of young people with new ideas advocate the independence of marriage, and the well begins to appear as a "new type of wedding", that is, wearing a suit, reading a certificate, exchanging an agreement, performing a ceremony, and playing music.
I witnessed a crying marriage on my own. Sitting in a red bridal sedan chair, the bride was bursting into a rage of tears, yelling in a hoarse voice, ”dad and mom, you treated me with your full soul and heart, and now you have to grieve to see me depart, pray to god for your health, how hard it is to do my filial duties…” her mother nearby was chocked with sobs, wiping her running tears. Anguished as they were, they couldn’t get rid of the tradition of marrying the man who chose her without soliciting her willingness.
Nowadays, the prayer songs has substituted for the ritual of crying marriage. It is not difficult to find out the reasons-the convenient transportation, the advancement of the statues of women and the advanced concept of free marriage, which facilitate the new form of the crying marriage composed by blessing songs and brides’ happy tears showing their gratitude to their parents and longing for the coming new lives.
