Abstract: English class is the main place for students to learn English and the main form of organizing foreign language teaching. Therefore, the efficiency of the classes is of great importance. Lead-in plays an important role in the English classes. However, many English teachers in senior high schools concentrate on explaining the knowledge, ignoring the functions of lead-in. Consequently, the results of lead-in are always far from expected. They think it will take time to lead in, but fail to realize that effective lead-in could activate the atmosphere of the classes, stimulate the students’ learning interest and motivation, develop the students’ thoughts, and then improve the efficiency of classes. This paper provides several typical models of lead-in by summarizing the theories at home and abroad to improve the degree of activeness of classes, to make the students concentrate on English classes, as a result, the phenomenon of time-wasting and low-efficiency classes will be changed.

1. Questions

Question lead-in is one of the most commonly used teaching methods in middle school English classes. By raising questions which are based on the content of the new lesson, teachers can quickly arouse students’ interest and form doubts in their mind, which leads them to seek solutions to the new knowledge. Sometimes teachers can try raising a long list of questions to make the atmosphere heated so that more students, even the whole class, can take an active part into the teaching activity.

2.Stories

Students in senior high schools are fond of stories. Funny and interesting stories can draw students’ attention and arouse their desire for knowledge, consequently help students to develop positive attitude to learning. I found that this method can have a better effect when students act as the story-tellers. Specifically, before the new class,the teacher gives students the task of telling or acting out a story with only one requirement,that is “Lead to the new text”,leaving students finish the task all by themselves. In this way, students can have so much learning of a new text while their abilities of creation and independent learning are greatly improved.

3. Music

A relaxing and pleasant learning environment could not only help our students reduce their pressure, but also cultivate their confidence of learning English. Music, a kind of art full of content, can attract the students’ attention, develop their imagination and improve their ability of thinking. According to the characteristics of the students in senior high schools, most of them like singing and listening to music. Their interest will be provoked in music. What’s more, music can make our classroom atmosphere relax. Therfore, we can choose musics related to the teaching content as lead-in.

4. Free Talk

Free talk,defined as the communication between the teacher and the students,or students and students on a certain topic,is a practically useful way to get the classroom climate relaxing and harmonious with the natural communication of the students. During free talk lead-in, students are not learning but acquiring. The information has already transmitted to the acquirers’ brain under a kind of unconscious state naturally. Therefore, free talk lead-in is really an effective means to activate the classroom atmosphere,set up harmonious relationship between teacher and students,and train students’ abilities to organize language and express themselves.

5. Visual or Multi-Media

The multi-media gathers the different pictures, text, images, voice, and vision to display the content of the various information, which makes the lifeless knowledge interesting and abstract things concrete. IWhen using the multi-media to display the course, teachers should choose the proper Power Points according to the characteristics of the teaching content. With the help of multi-media teaching, students can feel and understand the content easily in relaxing happy atmosphere.

6. Revision

Confucius said: “He who by reviewing the old can gain knowledge of the new is fit to be a teacher.” Revision is to adopt various means and strategies so as to review what the students have already learned and acquired. Every new lesson gets widened and deepened from the former one. Thus,it is helpful for the students to accept the new knowledge with the lead-in by revision, presenting some familiar terms and concepts.
