Welcome to Silk Road Tour.My name is Seven Xu,one of the little tour guides here.Today,I would like to show you a typical building in Yuan Dynasty which is Liusheng Pagoda.And you can learn about this cultural relic from its shape,legend,to its function through the eyes of me—a native-born citizen here.
You can see,this historical and religious pagoda locates on Chai Moutain in the Shihu Village of Shishi,Quanzhou City and stands at the entrance of the Quanzhou sea.It is 36.06 meters high,and 47 meters wide at the bottom.It is a five-storey building with eight upward angles.Also,there are various Buddha sculptures carved on the eaves and outer walls of the tower.You know,most Chinese believe in Buddism and pray to the Buddha for longevity.
It’s said that this pagoda was carried out by the monks,Song Shen and Zuhui in Northern Song Dynasty,and got repaired in Yuan Dynasty.There was a legend of Liusheng Pogoda.It’s rumored that two monsters in the ancient Shihu village kept making troubles,which made people in this area panic and boatmen dared not go past.Since that,the Monk Zu Hui and Song Shen asked Mazu goddess for help to bring them under control and then built Liusheng Pagoda.There was a legend recording that in order to help the boats sail safely at night,Lv Dongbin,a very famous god in Chinese taoism god system,borrowed a night pearl from the King of the Sea and placed it on the top of the pagoda.Therefore,the lighthouse would send out light from far away.
In ancient times，there were two towns at the foot of Chai Moutain.They are Shihu and Hanjiang.These two towns were important harbors which witnessed the prosperity of overseas transportation.According to historical record,there were 18 ferries here at that time,and there were hundreds of foreign ships floating in the harbor.And this is due to the fact that the pagoda had the function of navigation and it was regarded as the first lighthouse of Maritime Silk Road navigating Zhenghe’s voyages to the west and promoting the contacts across the channel.At the beginning of the Qing Dynasty,it became the central dock between the mainland and Taiwan.As you ascend slowly to the top,you can see the vast strait and the numerous ships moving back and forth.By far,Shihu Wharf has been built as a modern 10,000-ton wharf,as well as the largest port to import stones in China.Throughout 800 years,Liusheng Pagoda still stands like a giant at the top of Chai Mountain and witnesses the prosperity and changes of this por t.
Finally,I would like to add that besides this pagoda,there are two more relics -----Linluan Ferry and Gusao Pagoda which are known as three treasures in my hometown,as well as many other historic interests in this amazing land.Quanzhou keeps creating miracles all the time.In the new era,we should work together to protect the historical and cultural heritage,promote the spirit of sustainable development,and let the next generation feel about our determination of culture protection under the appeal of “The Belt and Road”.And don't forget to come and visit the places of interests in Quanzhou,which has a long history,a rich culture and a typical style of Maritime Silk Road.Trust me.It would never let you down.
